October 22, 2016

In the world of martial arts, the strong yet humble stand out. Amid all the training and studying the way of the warrior, there will be those who want to see how far they have progressed. For them to do so, they must fight. That's exactly what happened last October 22.

The World Kickboxing Federation (WKF) Philippines,  presented Fight Club 2016, an amateur light contact kickboxing Championship event. It took place in Hybrid Manila Gym at Pasig on October 22 with seven fights on the card and other segments afterwards, and it went off without a hitch.

The event was made possible by WKF Philippines president Director Andy Kunz, as well as sponsors Rockwool, Philippine Insulation, AV Surfer, and the venue Hybid Manila Gym. Sifu Sonny Go of Jeet kune do Philippines and Savate Philippines  serve as master of ceremonies and fight announcer for the event.

The kickboxing matches were sanctioned under light contact rules, with four on the undercard and three on the main card. The undercard featured young fighters eager to test their skills, while the main card showcased Filipino fighters against Japanese fighters in a battle for pride and glory.

Light contact rules meant excessive force were penalized, which was in place to encourage control in technique and ringmanship. The matches were fought in three 2-minute rounds, after which the winner of each fight were decided by judges through the 10-point must system.

The judges for the contests were Lito Cantillo of Vibrotect, Erol Malapitan of Rockwool Philippiness, and Lawrence Quijano of Sony Philippines. The referee who presided over the bouts was Sifu Victor Villarta of Survival Solutions Jeet kune do  Philippines.

Undercard

The first undercard bout was Kyokushin Karate practitioner John Ronald Barbero against Shotokan Karate practitioner Jayson Moslares. It was a competitive match that saw Barbero eke out a close decision win.

The second undercard bout was Jeet Kune Do and Street Boxing fighter Arnel Sabandal against Taekwondo practitioner Cainne Alipio. Sabandal unleashed an arsenal of kicks and pressured with punches to get the nod.

The third undercard bout was Muay Thai and MMA fighter Santino Dumlao against Taekwondo practitioner Ferdinand Tolentino. While Dumlao had a power advantage, Tolentino made use of his mobility, diverse kicks, and psychological advantage (by emulating Bruce Lee's signature cat screech with each hit) to come out on top.

The final undercard bout was Muay Thai fighter Steve Sevilleno of Hybrid Manila Gym against Taekwondo practitioner Charles Ongchangco. While Sevilleno came forward with greater pressure, he also threw a couple of blows with excessive force, which he was penalized for. Meanwhile, Ongchangco showed a lot of heart and kept fighting back with his arsenal of kicks, giving him the narrow victory.

Main Card

The main card went underway with Filipino fighters against Japanese Savate fighters. The first main bout was an all-female match between Jeet Kune Do figher Ilyn Catorce against Savate fighter Yupin. Catorce fought valiantly, but Yupin showed superior technique and ringmanship to get the win at Round 2 via surrender .

The second main bout was Muay Thai fighter Gian Carlo Bilon against Savate fighter Tomohiro Nozaki. It was a very competitive match with both competitors pouring it all in the cage, with Nozaki getting the decision win.

The main event Master’s Division Light Contact Championship was Kickboxing, Jeet Kune Do and Savate Philippines Kenneth” Wolfman “ Pua against Norihisa Watanabe of Savate Japan.

It was a hard fight for both competitors and the judges, who took a good while to deliberate the result after the bout. They then agreed to give Kenneth “ Wolfman “ Pua the win by virtue of executing cleaner technique. Kenneth “ Wolfman “ Pua is declared the new WKF Philippines Light Contact Kickboxing Champion
